French Coast to Canal du Midi

We walked through a mediterranean forest along the trail to the Abbaye de St Roman to the top of the hill above the Rhone River. The monks lived here until 1538 when it was taken over and fortifications added. The monks originally used the structures crested earlier by hermits and dug further into the hill to make the chambers, chapel, tombs and cellars.
